Hi,
I am planning on sitting the Gamsat in 2011, however I am not sure as to what I should do next year. I really want to study medicine, but I know that it is very difficult to get in. With that in mind, should I pursue study in another field of interest next year while preparing for the Gamsat? That way, if I find that I am not capable of being doctor, I will at least have have given myself other options.
Obviously I really want to be a doctor, but I feel I should be realistic and prepared for the possibility of rejection.
Also if I do pursue graduate study in another field, would it affect my chances of being accepted into medicine?
Thanks

Hi Ophelia,
Its great to know that you want to be a doctor and plan to sit GAMSAT in 2011. Yes you right in thinking that you can enroll yourself in a different course in 2010 while preparing for GAMSAT. In that case there are two good options for you: One is that you get enrolled in a course that is related to the life sciences and that way comes in handy for GAMSAT preparation. The other option for you could be to take up something that's not very pressurizing, yet is a valuable course, thereby providing you ample time for study, as well as providing an alternate career option.
I would suggest that you go for the former option. And yes, while its prudent to be realistic, you must also have lots of faith in yourself from the very outset. So go at it with a very positive outlook, and you will surely succeed.
To answer your last query, if you pursue studies in a different field, it will not affect your chances of being accepted in medicine. In fact, GAMSAT is not only open to students of varied backgrounds, but encourages the same.
Cheers!
