Hi
I've just finished yr 12 and did not get into med. I want to get a really early head start on the gamsat and am planning to sit it next year. Just want to know what specific subjects I need to study. I generally know that first year bio, chem and hsc physics are examined but i want to know what areas within these subjects are usually asked (e.g biochem, organic chem, physiology etc.)
Much advice/help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Hi,
It's great that you have decided on sitting for the GAMSAT just after finishing your 12th yr. GAMSAT is no easy test that can be "cracked" by last minute rote learning. Getting a feel of the test pattern, GAMSAT questions way before the actual test day will give you a definite edge over others.
Make sure you get a good GPA during your degree course.
A good GPA + a good GAMSAT score = the med college of your dreams
Although there is no concrete syllabus for GAMSAT defined by ACER, the following list has been prepared covering all of the topics that were included in previous year GAMSAT question papers:
Biology Topics:
* Cell biology and cell division
* Enzymes and macromolecules
* Nutrition and Cellular Metabolism
* Musculo-skeletal System
* Gastrointestinal System
* Respiratory System
* Circulatory System
* Excretory System
* Neuromuscular physiology and Nervous System
* Homeostasis, Diffusion and Osmosis, and Membrane-transport system
* Reproductive System
* Embryology and foetal circulation
* Immunology
* Microbes and communicable disease
* Genetics
* Endocrinology and Hormonal pathways
Chemistry topics:
* Atoms, Molecules and Chemical Arithmetic
* Structure of Atom
* Nuclear Chemistry
* Classification of Elements and Periodicity
* Chemical Bonding
* Concepts of Acids-Bases and Oxidation-Reduction
* Solid State
* Behaviour of Gases
* Solutions
* Chemical Equilibrium
* Ionic Equilibria
* Chemical Energetics
* Chemical Kinetics
* Surface Chemistry
* Electrochemistry
* Coordination Compounds
* Analytical Chemistry
* Purification and Analysis of Organic Compounds
* General Organic Chemistry
* Classification and Nomenclature of Organic Compounds
* Hydrocarbons
* Halogen Derivatives
* Compounds containing Oxygen
* Active Methylene Compounds
* Compounds containing Nitrogen/Sulphur
* Biochemistry
For Physics, revise the following topics:
* Physical World and Measurement
* Kinematics
* Laws of Motion
* Work, Energy and Power
* Motion of System of Particles and Rigid Body
* Gravitation
* Mechanics of Solids and Fluids
* Heat and Thermodynamics
* Oscillations
* Waves
* Electrostatics
* Current Electricity
* Magnetic Effect of Current and Magnetism
* Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Current
* Electromagnetic Waves
* Optics
* Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation
* Atomic Nucleus
* Solids and Semiconductor Devices
Hope this helps you in giving a proper direction to your GAMSAT preparation.
NOTE: This is just a suggestive list. Make sure you practise the ACER test papers to form your own judgement, before you take the GAMSAT.
Cheers!! |
