Hi everyone,
I am new on here, i am a student going into my 3rd Biomedical science, and have my gamsat on the 18th September. I have been doing practice and have been getting free day trials for help. But i would really appreciate it if i could have some tips on what to focus more on, and where to get help, preparation, pointers and general improvement.
Thanks kelly

Hi Kelly, I've collated all the Gamsat resources I found useful and categorised them according to subject area and practice paper question. It's certainly not complete but it's a good place to start. It's up at revisegamsat.
Good luck with it!

Hi Kelly,
First what you need to do is identify where your knowledge base stands. Assess everything starting from the humanities to writing to chemistry to physics to biology. Every subject is important in GAMSAT. Identify which ones you're strong in and the ones you're weak in.
How to approach?
There are two ways to approach the preparation, once you've found your strong and weak areas.
1 - to strengthen those areas in which you are already strong in
2 - to make your weak areas strong
Honestly, I feel there is no heroism in strengthening something you're already strong in. Then again, you cannot leave them totally. You have to strike a balance between all the areas. So, if you have to give more time to the subjects/topics you are weak in, give it. Also keep yourself updated with the topics you know you already know.
Also, there is something you have to keep in mind...
For example, say, physics. They are only 20% of all the reasoning in biological and physical sciences questions. This is in comparison to the biology and chemistry questions which each share 40% of the section III in the paper. So, work out accordingly giving proportionate time to each and every subject.
About preparation. There are many preparation courses available around you. Look for the one that caters to what you need. Draw a timescale and start working out as per your routine.
Keep some time for reading and writing too.
For Section I and II, you need to be reading and increasing your vocabulary. Read books, articles, newspapers ... anything that you get your hands on. The internet has a myriad of literary stuff available. Look for them and read away.
You also need to be practising writing. Section II is given a lot of importance in the exam. Even if you fair well in the 1st and 3rd sections, if you haven't been able to secure a good score in the 2nd one, you might not get an interview call. So, write write write. At least once in a day or couple of days. Get them evaluated by somebody, maybe a senior or teacher or someone whose judgement you trust. You have to then work on the places where you have problems in.
For the 3rd section, you need to first strengthen your basics in the 3 science subjects. Then again only learning might not help. Applying your knowledge in the real environment will give you quite a lot of confidence. So,when you feel you're ready to face the flames practise sample papers. Then you will know whether you might get burned in the main exam day or will get through the fire.
Last but not the least, I believe self evaluation can lead to successful results. Keep evaluating yourself and have the confidence to succeed. There will be no one then to stop you from achieving anything in life. |
