Hi, I'm 22 and considering trying to get into medicine from scratch, with nothing behind me.
I have a learning disablity that affects my abililty to sit timed tests.
The learning disablity is to do with information processing and coming to accurate conclusions.
I was wondering if I would get extra time to sit the Gamsat test, given my learning difficulties? I have e-mailed acer about this - they said I would be granted special consideration, but they did not say what kind - wether it would involve extra time or not. and they did not say how much extra time would be granted. I woud need maybe double the normal amount.
So if anyone knows what the special consideration would involve, pls let me know. |

Hi Maddie!
Let me assure you that GAMSAT does have special provisions for people with disabilities. You need to submit a statement to ACER which explains your disability. This must be submitted to ACER no later than 5.00pm AEDT Tuesday 2 February.
Your letter must be accompanied by the letter from a registered practitioner which explains your situation in detail and states clearly how your condition affects your ability to sit GAMSAT.
ACER states that "All reasonable efforts will be made to provide appropriate testing conditions for your needs. "
I guess you got to submit the statement to ACER and wait for their response.
Keep posting and good luck!
Cheers!

Maddie, as has been mentioned above, there are provisions for those who have certain disabilities. You should contact ACER to see whether you are eligible. However, I will raise something that has occurred to me as a result of reading your post. You say that you have difficulties in processing information and coming to accurate conclusions. I hate to say it, but this will be a huge hurdle in tackling a course that is ALL about processing information and coming to conclusions. Everything in a medical course, from the PBL to the exam, centres around your ability to do just that. Only you can determine how much of a hindrance this will be, but the fact remains that in a life and death situation you will not be given extra time to come up with a treatment plan or a diagnosis. Medicine is a high pressure career, and it's best to acknowledge that from the very beginning.
All the best with your future endeavours. |

mmmm.
Thats a really tough one Maddie.
It might be worth actually going into one of the medical schools you're considering, and having a chat to a few students (about the nature of the study and approach), or possibly even to one of the staff members there about your situation, and your disability. This might shed some light on the liklihood that you would be able to function successfully within the program.
I'm a big supporter of equity, and embracing people of all kinds, but there is a line where a disability can really make Medicine untennable. Its a terrible situation, because I'd like to think that we can do anything we set our minds to.... but at the same time, I can tell you first hand that Medicine has been incredibly hard work for me, and I don't know how I would have faired with a disability like you've described above.
I'm not making any assumptions... I promise... just that you would be well advised to get some professional advice before making a run at GAMSAT.
I'm not suggesting that your disability would disqualify you, as I'm no expert, and I don't know you..... but I do recommend having a chat to some people who will be able to give you some solid (and perhaps professional) advice.
Good luck! |

Hi Maddie,
I applied for and got special testing conditions on my GAMSAT (London 2009) because of my terrible handwriting. I really just wanted a wordprocessor for the essay section but they gave me a little extra time, a few more minutes for each section and a scribe for the essay which was a real luxury as I got to stride up and down expounding to this poor UCAS guy
You can get extra support. However, you will need to disclose this to the universities on your UCAS form and justify it in your interview. If you have difficulties coming to accurate conclusions this may not go down well at interview for obvious reasons.
Good luck with your application, if you can get through Gamsat you deserve a shot. |
