so... how is everyone going?

I bought the current ACER practice materials, and have been working from them.

I found Section I alarmingly difficult. For example, at times I felt the 'answer' was debatable.

All in all, I got 16 out of 36..! Mad

Would love to hear from others...

yeh i found them harder than expected too. my plan of attack is to just do as many practice questions as possible. i think the key is getting your brain to interpret the passages faster and faster and also be able to take the key points they are looking for while under the pump.

as far as i know there isnt too many ways to study for this other than to practice, practice, practice!! if anyone has any tips then that would be awesome!!

hopefully this was a little more constructive for you than the above reply lol.

Cheers Pete.

Yeh - I'm doing the same thing. Working through the ACER materials with my 'lol' partner and just talking through our answers.

Will complete the practice test Section I & II under exam conditions and have my fingers crossed.

As a non-science person, I enjoy looking at the pictures in the Science III section!!

oh..... wait.

Hahh it's true the pictures are quite fascinating on their own=).

I haven't been practicing for the gamsat nearly as much as I should, but when I worked through Acer's section I questions I found it painful. I hope that's only because I haven't had enough practice yet...
Under timed conditions I only got through 26 of the 35 possible questions, and of those 26 I only got 14 correct. So I guess 14/35 was my timed score, and 22/35 was my un-timed score Shocked. So, good luck to us!

Hi guys,
good luck with it all, the section 3 is my issue and I'm losing my weekends to ions and compounds and pulmonary whatevers.... argh.

But for Section 1 I have found that there are often times when I'll think that one of the responses or half of one of the responses looks right but the other half doesn't or something along those lines. but basically it seems easiest to do it from elimination. If you can see straight away that one word in one of the answers goes against something you have thought about the text; eliminate it, usually your first impression is correct as its when your brain registers it in its purest form (in other words before you start to analyse and question yourself!!)

With the essays I have created mind maps (I got the test practice booklets) for the supplied essay topics which has been really helpful as it has shown me what format I would write these essays in and how I would approach the type of essay topics they give. (e.g. they seem to use a lot of theorists.. i know a bit about these from my first degree and so when creating my mind map have related it to why the quotation would be different now to when the theorist lived).

So these are just ideas that may or may not help, I'm spending my weekend at the library (woo hoo) so enjoy your study.

In Section I, we have roughly 1.33 mins p/question (including reading).

lol - that is a tough gig.

Hey guys,
All the best in the looming gamsat 2010!!
I too am very much concerned with sections 1 & 3 so most of my studies have been...well towards section 3 as I am an economics graduate.
What I found best was to understand and interpret the passages asap. If time permits I read the questions quickly first then made sure I read the passage/diagrams properly and I could then answer the questions (using the 2010 gamsat acer sample/practice questions).
I found the best stuff to do for political cartoon analysis was also to search for other material on the net and see if I could analyse them in a fast and accurate manner. I am found of Kal's cartoon work from the Economist, Kallery's, he uses alot of the main techniques which cartoons use in general to ridicule the current economical, politcal and cultural scenarios. The more you can understand this sort of work, the quicker I believe you become at understanding and interpretting many other pieces.
Mind you I feel no matter how much I am studying that it will never be enough for what may lie in this exam...!

Hi,

With questions on a host of topics...editorial cartoons, novel excerpts, journal extracts, poems, GAMSAT Section I is a real test of your reasoning skills. Each type of question has to be dealt with differently. There are specific ways to analyse a cartoon, whereas analysing poems requires a different approach. Solve as many types of Section I questions as you can to get a hang.

As there is no fixed syllabus, the only way to nail it would be solving a great deal of practise questions. Also review your scores and find out exactly where you go wrong. Many sample papers come with detailed explanations. It would be a good idea to go through them to understand the nitty gritties of questions. While you may sometimes feel that the "'answer' was debatable", this is only because you have not delved deep into it.

Best of luck!!
