When I said prestige, I was just trying to emphasize the great demand and competition for the course. As for me, I live and breath anatomy and physiology and the chance of making a difference in medicine. Bit of a cliche, but that's how feel!

I thought 1 in 5 was quite a high intake because, personally, I feel I'd have a very good chance at pipping 80% of the other med applicants. No offence guys!!!

Wasn't having a go at cha. Just sooooo many people I know say that medicine is for people who want to live a prestigeous lifestyle.....which it sooo isn't. No time, not a great income, sometimes bossed around by nurses and even dietitians!

Glad you are confident - I sooooo failed. I will be happy if I get above the 50th percentile this time around. Will make it a practice this year and study proper for it next year round.

I personally think 20% is high, I thought it was more like 10%, so I'm pretty happy to hear that Smile

20% - how crazy that all of these genuinely intelligent people are competing for spots and only 20% get through. The shortage is not only large, it is getting larger. You would think they would be trying to get as many people in as possible - expanding places at all med schools to cater. But apparently not.

There is hundreds of med schools in the US and here there is so few. I would be surprised if Australian doctors werent held in very high esteem over there considering how difficult it is just to get into the course, let alone 'survive' the 4 years!!!

I'm just starting my preparation for the '08 GAMSAT now, and will be getting the ACER material. I am also going to get just one course material and was wondering which one I should get. I have a very strong science background and my literature comprehension and essay writing isn't as strong.

I hear Ozimed is good, but there doesn't seem to be very such material there. Medprep is very expensive and I hear it doesn't prepare you to the standards of which are tested in the actual exam. I havn't heard much but MediRed! What other ones are out there? Which do you recommend?

Bradsmith I used Medprep so can't comment on others except ACER which I assume you'll get because it's pretty cheap, and from the source.

I found the Medprep tests similar in standard to the actual exam (except less organic chem which was over the top this year). Some people reckon the tests are easier though - and they might have been for this year too as the concensus it was a tougher one.

Section 3 in the book though is pretty so-so - great as a syllabus guide, but you will have to supplement the information with your own texts. You can easily do this with some cheap second hand 1st year ones (I went out to Monash 2nd hand bookshop and just paid $10 total for a chem and a physics book!).

NOTE: Some of the organic chem in Medprep is just plain wrong and I wrote to them to ask for an errata - no response ever. Make of that what you will. For something this expensive, it's unsatisfactory service.

The Section 1 and 2 parts of Medprep were really good though - they give you a very disciplined technique for writing section 2 essays, and the Section1 examples/test questions are copious, and much harder than the real thing, with good explanations. Having up to 6 essays reviewed was fantastic as you really do need honest feedback from an English teacher on your work, as Section 1 and 2 on the test are not just some half-arsed 'English for Scientists' test. If you're one of those people that doesn't read books, I'd start right now too! You won't do well in S1/2 through a course you spend a month or two on - it's a lifelong habit to get these skiills.

I think though if I had to do it again (I won't thank god), I'd definitely get the Ozimed tests as they sound a) hard and b) get you well practiced for the most important aspect of GAMSAT - using your brain for a whole day and having to think as hard and quickly in the 7th hr as the first!

Good luck and feel free to ask me any questions - I was shocked when I saw my scores today, and want to share with others what I discovered during this process I only started late Jan!

i was just laughing a little to myself when i saw the comment about the prestige of doing medicine.. i've been working as a a critical care nurse for 4 years and people have NO idea how hard it is to be a doctor..

if you make it through university, then you have a massive 4 to 8 or so YEARS until your completely specialised and having life somewhat easier, be the head honcho with the knowledge and experience..

plus you come in at the very bottom of the food chain and earn very little in comparison to what you spent to get there! you will be working at night, long days and hours.. you will be having less of a life because you will be serving others.. you will be completely lost in the hospital system for the first year because the systems are maddening. ..

but what can i say i sat gamsat this year with one month prep and almost got marks good enough for applying but the science was too much (considering i haven't been a uni for 4 years) so i sitting it again and looking for good science prep.

so even though the work is rough i couldn't imagine not doing it or giving it a go anyways...

hey guys,

i work fulltime as an accountant but plan on sitting the 2009 gamsat. read up on diff opinions of the courses out there for someone who's weak in science and this is the perception i have on S3 materials so far:

ozimed: good practice bc of quantity of exams (10) but are easier than the real thing
des o'neill: lots of notes, can be confusing
medprep: dont bother, not helpful and too expensive
medired: ?
guru: ?

the alternative is to just study the topics from a yr 12 chem/physics/bio syllabus

what do you guys think? those that have done these courses or the actual gamsat?
